It depends entirely on the build. A very energy hungry build (for example, SS/arcane echo) would benefit from a +5 energy 5>50 staff. If you're running a build like tainted flesh, you'd want the same staff with an enchanting mod on it, or a +5 energy/enchantments 20% and an offhand. Obviously raising your cap does not equal energy management, but often times every little bit can help.
For all casters I use a halves skill recharge 20% health +30 offhand.
